KYCLOS communal kitchen inspired us for SPICE UP project. SPICE UP is an e-book of recipes from around the world: Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Uganda. KYCLOS members share with us their favorite homeland dishes, wanting Greeks to know them better.

 

After all, refugees know so much about us, our language, our country, our food, our holidays, but we know so little about them, even though we live next to each other, are served by them and our children go to the same schools.

In other words, social integration seems to be one-sided.

In KYCLOS, we believe that safety is built through relationships and that today the answer to life's complexity is networking. We created this e-book so that Greeks can also get to know more the people they live together with.

​

Food for each of us is associated with memories and always brings people together. Much to our surprise, when we asked our students, we realized that we are closer to them than we thought. Kurds told us that their favorite food is dolmadakia and Syrians, stuffed tomatoes!

​

And the most important: for both of us these dishes are associated with our childhood. They are not considered ethnic dishes, that we assimilated later on.

 

This is why SPICE UP is not just  an e-book of recipes, but a program of social, two sided, integration!
